Sri Argala Stotram, a hymn from the Durga Saptashati sings the praises of the great goddess as Kali- “Jayanti Mangala Kali, Bhadrakali Kapalini, Durga Kshama Shivaa Dhatri, Svaha Svadha Namostute”. I bow down to you(namostute), who is ever-victorious (Jayanti), auspicious (Mangala), dark-hued (Kali), the calm aspect of the warring mother (Bhadrakali), holder of skulls (Kapalini), the great mother (Durga), forgiveness incarnate (Kshama), beloved of Shiva (Shivaa), divine mother (dhatri), fulfiller of Yajna (swaha) who receives all offerings to the Pitr or ancestors (Swadha). In the hymn as in Hindu-Tantra tradition, the goddess Kali is the embodiment of supreme, active feminine energy or Prakriti, the origin, existence, and end of all things.

In this stone goddess Kali sculpture, the artist has offered the mother goddess a large pedestal with embellishments of lotus petals. The goddess is four-armed (Chaturbhuja) with her three arms brandishing symbols of her cosmic ferociousness on the battlefield- Khadaga (sickle), severed head, and Khappara (skull cup) to collect the blood that drips from the head. Devi Kali’s primary right hand is positioned in the “Varada-mudra” or the gesture of disseminating boons to her devotees. A well-crafted aura surrounding Maa Kali’s countenance in this stone statue is designed like a fully blossomed lotus, a symbol of supreme consciousness that Mahakali bestows on her Sadhakas (worshippers).

With a tasteful polishing and carving of the stone goddess Kali statue, Devi’s ethereal form is revealed in this icon stunningly. A mystical dark grey hue natural to the stone fits Maa Kali’s battle-ready form, which is described as incomprehensible darkness. The facial expression of the warring mother is utterly calm, motherly, and beautiful with the lotus-shaped eyes, refined nose, and a third eye that adorns the forehead between the perfectly arched brows. Devi’s tongue which usually lolls strikingly is condensed in this stone Maa Kali statue, giving her a rather lovely appearance. Her open tresses flow behind her like downward blazing fire enhancing the imposing effect of the goddess Kali murti. Queenly crown, necklace, armbands, bracelets, waistbelt, Mundamala (skull garland), and a girdle of severed hands ornament the majestic form of the goddess. Under her feet lies Shiva Mahadeva with a serpent in his neck and a Trishula (trident) in his hand. A simple yet potent iconography of the mother-goddess, this stone goddess Kali icon emanates the all-pervading motherly grace of the dark mother.
