Book Description
Preface

The first edition of this book was sold out many years ago For want of time, it was not possible to revise and publish an enlarged edition of this book, much earlier. The Chapters on Musical Appreciation (Chapter VII) and Musical Tests (Chapter X) have been enlarged. Chapter XIII dealing with the History of Musical education in South India and other topics is an addition to this Edition. The Appendix entitled Musical Code is also an addition to this edition. The matter in this Appendix will provide interesting food for thought. This code has been tried in many places and found successful.
With the rapid increase in the number of institutions imparting instruction in music, the subject of Musical Pedagogy has assumed special importance. Precious little has been written on this subject, in the musical works of the past for the simple reason, that the Ancients did not visualise the coming into existence of schools and colleges of colossal strength and dimensions and the consequent teaching of songs to large groups of pupils at the same time. In the ancient Gurukula system, the pupil had unlimited time at his disposal and he spent many years with his master. If he was intelligent and the master also was sincere in imparting knowledge he made amazing progress. Otherwise it became a doubtful venture. From the very nature of the case, it was not possible for girls to take advantage of the Gurukula system.
Times have now changed and one should make the fullest use of the facilities available under modern conditions. In a class consisting of the Intelligent, Average and Dull students, healthy emulation is always possible for the less gifted ones, and this is a distinct advantage in the modern system of education,
