Book Description
About The Book

This book is an outcome of a research carried out during 2018-2021 to study and evaluate manuscript conservation activities in Maharashtra that earned the author his second PhD degree. The book introduces to the readers the grand cultural legacy of India, several aspects of manuscript conservation and the need for concerted efforts for preserving the cultural legacy. It also gives a detailed description of manuscript custodian and conservation centres in Maharashtra along with a graphical analysis of the collection, wherewithal and activities of National Mission for Manuscripts' partner centres in Maharashtra. The book suggests several measures for bringing more efficiency in the manuscript conservation efforts.

The cultural heritage of any country is its backbone and preservation of the knowledge and wisdom enshrined in the manuscripts is vital for its identity, self esteem and pride. The Article 51A (f) of the constitution of India describes preservation of the culture of this great nation as one of the fundamental duties of the citizens. It states that the duty of every citizen of India shall be 'to value and preserve the rich heritage of our composite culture. The Higher Education Institutes (HEI) have a great responsibility to preserve the traditional knowledge systems, heritage and cultural material apart from carrying out teaching and learning, research, publication and extension activities. This book is a ready reckoner for all the university and college libraries and for all those interested or involved in the conservation of manuscript heritage of India.
