I remember, when I was a student at College, a Professor asked the students if they knew anything about the conquests of Latitaditya. Everyone was, dumb. I felt ashamed. This is why I did not take up history in my Degree course. After leaving the College I started studying available literature on the history of Kashmir. Somehow, I prepared a rough account which was published in the columns of the Akhbar-i-aam of Lahore in serial order. This was followed up by independent publications in 1925, 1932, 1946 and 1954. It did invite attention but there was little response from those for whom it was primarily meant. Nevertheless, the book has since grown from fact to fact and page to page. It still remains a bird's eye-view account and serves its own purpose. The short-comings in previous editions have been mostly removed. A fresh chapter on 'Cultural and Economic heritage' has been added.
