See It In Your Home
Framed in an elaborate and stylized cosmic ring of flames as the prabhamandala and a three-layered pedestal of inverted lotus petal design on the second and third layer each; Lord Shiva stands here in a very difficult manoeuvre of Urdhva Tandava as a gesture of defeating Goddess Kali.
Goddess Kali was the guardian of the forest in Thillai and refused to allow Lord Shiva to dance at her place, therefore Shiva challenged Kali to a dance battle on the condition that whoever wins will be banished from that area.
While in his Ananda Thandavam, Shiva performed this step of Urdhva Tandava- right leg thrust vertically towards the sky and Kali being a dignified and modest woman demurely bowed down to the lord of not being able to perform the same pose. Shiva’s left leg is placed on the dwarf demon Apasmara, a personification of ignorance. He is garbed in a short dhoti and ornamented with lavish treasures on his body.
Exotic India feels glad to have this exclusive sculpture in two different shades of a bright golden color and the other in a unique royal blue with golden highlights; carved with six hands, Shiva carries his iconic attributes and the left rear hand goes above his head. He is surrounded by snakes in his hands and legs as his nature of capturing death and the hair strands coming out sideways in fierceness of his dance. Sculptor has very neatly carved the curves of his body, formations of his lips, eyes, nose and the river Ganga flowing out from his head. Even the sharpness of expressions of the demon gives a realistic feel to the viewer.
