The Devguru or master of gods Brihaspati, is rarely depicted in art, making this grand, nearly 6-foot large granite sculpture an unparalleled piece of sacred art.
Wearing a conical crown and regal ornaments, the planetary deity Brihspati or Guru appears not as an old man but as a youthful divine. His attributes include a stick or sword, a rosary, and a lotus cradled delicately in his palm.
With his Katihasta mudra (hand placed on the waist) and the beautifully delineated dhoti with tasseled knots on the side, Brihaspati reminds us of Vishnu, who is also represented in the similar Sampada-sthanaka pose (standing with both feet together), a posture-related with order and stability, which come from the benevolence of Brihaspati.
