Abhishek Patras are meant for bathing the deities or murtis of God or Goddesses on special occasions such as Radhashtami, Janmashtami, Shivratri, etc.
This ritual is known as “Abhishekam” and has great significance in the Vedic culture. It is considered to be a type of devotional service that is performed primarily to please the Lord.
The secondary benefit of this rite is that the person performing and or watching it gets the mercy of the Lord and is able to increase love and devotion towards him.
This small Abhishek Patra is made up of brass and is suitable for one or two small deities to be worshiped and bathed. The deities are seated on the tray of the patra and sprinkled with various liquid ingredients such as milk, honey, yogurt, sugar syrup, ghee (clarified butter) and fruit juices. These liquids are allowed to pass through the given outlet on the tray and collected in another vessel, which are then mixed and the mixtureis known as ‘Charanamrita’ or ‘the elixir of life’, which is distributed among the devotees.
The deities are also showered with lots of fragrant flowers (Pushpa Abhishek), and then are dressed and ornamented. This whole ritual is performed along with the chanting of the holy names of the Lord being worshiped. Note the smooth surface of this patra; its base is in conical shape.
