The Lord stands on an inverted Lotus pedestal. A wide white tilak (Urdhva Pundra) on His forehead covers some part of the nose. A snake is coiled around each of the upper arms of the Lord, and the hands hold a conch shell (Shankha) and Sudarshan Chakra. The lower hands hold the gesture of protective Abhaya Mudra and boon-granting Varada Mudra. The beautiful Goddess Padmavati majestically sits in an altar next to Her Lord holding lotuses in Her upper hands, bestowing Her grace upon the devotees. The divine couple is fully decorated from head to lotus feet with heavy ornaments. The white intricate detailing of the black idols sets off a unique contrast that gives the essence of Vaikuntha, the place of no miseries.

Lord Venkateshvara is considered to be a form of Lord Vishnu to have descended on the earth from Vaikuntha (the abode of Lord Vishnu). Fondly called as Balaji, He is the presiding deity of Tirupati Temple. The word Venkateshvara means ‘The Lord of Venkata’ (Venkata is the name of a hill in South India, and Ishvara meaning Lord). Whenever and wherever, there is predominance of irreligiosity, the Supreme Lord descends to establish Dharma, and Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of Venkateshvara in this kali yuga for this very purpose. Goddess Padmavati is the consort of Lord Venkateshvara, and is an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi (the consort of Lord Vishnu). The word Padmavati denotes ‘She who resembles the beauty of a Lotus’.
