Deity of Destruction and Creation

Within Hindu cosmology, Lord Shiva holds a pivotal position as both the destroyer and transformer. He embodies the cyclical nature of existence, where destruction is essential for new creation and renewal. He is known by many names - Mahadeva (the Great God), Nataraja (Lord of Dance), and Shankara (the Auspicious One) – each reflecting a facet of his complex and multifaceted persona. This intricately crafted brass sculpture offers a window into the heart of Shiva’s powerful symbolism. The statue captures Shiva in his Nataraja form, performing the Tandava – the cosmic dance of creation and destruction. His flowing locks, adorned with the crescent moon, signify control over time. The river Ganga, cascading through his hair, represents purity and liberation. His third eye, located on his forehead, symbolizes wisdom and the ability to perceive beyond the material realm, capable of incinerating all that stands in the path of truth. In one hand, he holds the damaru drum, representing the sound of creation, while in another, he wields a flame, symbolizing destruction and the burning away of illusions.

The Temple Setting

This representation of Shiva is further enhanced by its temple-like setting. The architectural design invokes the sacred spaces where Shiva is worshipped, from humble village shrines to grand, ancient temples. The tiered base leads up to a platform, suggesting the elevated status of the divine. Pillars support a canopy crowned with a traditional finial, creating a sense of enclosure and reverence. The intricate detailing of the structure mirrors the elaborate carvings found in actual temples, fostering a sense of authenticity and spiritual connection. The temple setting reminds us that Shiva is not only a powerful deity but also a readily accessible source of comfort, guidance, and transformation for those who seek his blessings.

Symbolism of the Underfoot

Beneath Shiva's dancing foot lies the figure of Apasmara, the dwarf demon representing ignorance and ego. Shiva’s triumph over Apasmara symbolizes the conquest of these negative qualities through spiritual practice and devotion. This act represents the suppression of ignorance that keeps individuals bound to the cycle of suffering. It is a potent reminder that true liberation comes from transcending the ego and embracing wisdom and knowledge. This sculpture serves as a powerful symbol of hope and transformation, reminding us that even in the face of darkness, the light of Shiva’s grace can lead us to enlightenment.

Artisanal Craftsmanship

Crafted from solid brass, this statue exudes a timeless elegance and durability. The warm, golden hue of the metal enhances the intricate details of the sculpture, bringing Shiva’s form and the temple setting to life. The meticulous craftsmanship ensures that each element of the piece, from Shiva’s ornaments to the architectural details of the temple, is rendered with precision and care. Measuring 13.0 x 6.5 x 5.0 inches, it is a striking piece suitable for home altars, meditation spaces, or as a centerpiece in a collection of sacred art. This handcrafted piece carries with it the blessings and the skill of artisans who have devoted their lives to preserving ancient traditions.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
