Standing on a dual pedestal inscribed with lotus petals, this brass statue belongs to the Hindu moon god, Chandra. According to the religious text, he is a youthful god, associated with fertility, beauty, medicine, and night. He is one of the Nav Grahas (nine planets) in Hindu astronomy and astrology.
Chandra Deva is often described as a young man, holding a lotus flower in his hand, which is a symbol of fertility and beauty, and also the water element. In this brass murti, Chandra Deva holds two lotus buds which signify the earliest stages of growth, just before the fully blossomed state. In his left hand, he holds a kalash (a pot) filled probably with water or Soma (an intoxicating drink used in Vedic rituals). Chandra Deva is also known as Soma hence his obvious connection with the drink. His right hand is raised in Varada Mudra, bestowing boons upon his worshippers. Though the moon itself is revered as a naturalistic, divine presence, and Chandra- darshan (the act of looking at the moon) is considered pious, many worshippers, especially women worship Chandra Deva to gain fertility and beauty. The stories related to Chandra Deva, the ones where he was cursed by his father-in-law Daksha to lose his brightening beauty and later partly gained it with the help of lord Shiva are a reminder that one must not be too proud, but also that one must not give up hope. That each one of us goes through ups and downs, and just like the waning moon, our life always achieves its full potential with the passage of time.
