The gracious Sarasvati is strumming Her veena. Seated on a throne carved with ornate lotus petals; afloat in a sea of engraved, delicately curving vine. The sculptor has applied the same style to Sarasvati’s hair and attire and crown and the rest of Her adornment.
Sarasvati’s gentle head lowers laterally towards where Her fingers are along the long neck of the veena. It is as if Her luxuriantly embellished crown weighs upon Her. A lifelike detail introduced by the artist into the composition.
Immediately next to the foot of Her folded limb (Devi Sarasvati is in lalitasana), stands Her vahana, the peacock, its plumage as elaborately carved as the rest of the work. Note how the face is turned towards the devoted viewer.
