When her children are safe from the attacks of demons and evil forces, the almighty Mahishasurmardini Durga takes the form of a loving mother. She becomes the rays of the sun, the flow of the rivers, the seed that is sown, the Earth that is tilled, and the strength of the farmer who tills it. In Hinduism, this is the imagery of the great mother goddess, as the mother who nourishes, which is visualized by craftsmen as Annapurna- the provider of food grains.
Since she is the source of fertility and nourishment, Maa Annapurna is shown as a young woman, endowed with all the signs of fecundity. She has pronounced breasts, highlighted by a flower-studded breast band, she wears royal jewellery and an imposing crown, all studded with priceless gemstones. A single string yajnopavita from her left shoulder diagonally crosses her body. Devi sits in Ardhaparyankasana, with one leg folded and the other slightly stretched, both made appealing by the designer fabric of her dhoti. Goddess Annapurna sits on a padmapeetha (lotus platform) and with a ladle, in one hand a bowl in the other, serves food imbibed with her affection and invites her children to partake in the divine feast.
