The Abhishek Patra that we see here is made up of copper from South India. Note the reddish-brown color of the Patra and its natural lustre makes it look very beautiful and flawless. This simple tray is meant for bathing the idols or murtis of God or Goddess with various liquids such as milk, honey, yogurt, rose water, sugar syrup and fruit juices. This ritual is known as “Abhishekam” which is very important devotional service rendered unto the Lord. It pleases Him and purifies our consciousness and has the potency of unveiling our ignorance.
This Patra is large in size which makes it suitable for two or three idols to be worshiped together. There is an outlet on the tray which allows all the liquid ingredients to pass through it into a separate vessel in which it is collected and mixed. The mixture is considered very sacred since it is obtained from the Lotus feet of the deities. This is the reason why it is called Charanamrita or the elixir of life. After the liquids have been sprinkled, flowers are showered on the deities (Pushpa Abhishekam), and then their clothes are changed and they are adorned with beautiful ornaments.
