In this handmade marble goddess Durga murti, Devi is in her potent Ashta-Bhuja (eight-armed) form which she takes to slay the forces of demons on the battleground. Maa Durga carries a Chakra (discus), Khadaga (sword), Dhanusha (bow), Trishula (trident), Kamala (lotus), Gada (mace), and Shankha (conch) in seven hands, while her primary right hand is in the Mudra (gesture) of fearlessness. A magnificent halo around her crowned face, a pair of globular golden earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, armbands, waistbelts, and anklets, all painted with a glistening golden color on the marble Durga statue beautify the lustrous roopa of the Devi. She is draped in a pleasing light pink sari that appears dreamy against the milky white marble surface of the idol.
Maa Durga’s
facial features- from her large eyes to her smiling lips convey a motherly
gentleness in the way they are delineated, a quality which is shared by her
ferocious mount, the lion with a red dot on his forehead and softened
features appears to be smiling. The Simha-Vahini (lion-rider) Devi Durga sits
in a variation of Lalitasana (posture of royal ease) with her left leg
dangling- a characteristic that symbolizes her willingness to reach her
children quickly, like a mother reaches her crying baby and soothes all its
worries.
