The six-armed Mahakala, often referred to as the "swift-acting Lord of Spotless Awareness," holds a position of utmost reverence among the various forms of Mahakala.
Mahakala serves as the principal protector of the Shangpa and Kagyu traditions and is regarded as a wrathful emanation of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. In depictions, the deity is characterized by three eyes on his visage, including one on his forehead, symbolizing the understanding of time through the past, present, and future. His crown is adorned with five skulls, representing the five destructive delusions of anger, desire, ignorance, envy, and pride. Ultimately, these illusions transform into the wisdom pearls of the five Buddha families.
