Goddess Mariamman- the South Indian female divinity who is variably associated with Devi Parvati, Kali, Renuka, and Durga is, in essence, a powerful mother-goddess, a Grama-devata (village deity) and a form of the divine feminine, evoked by her devotees to protect them from diseases and epidemics.
Here we have the goddess Mariamman in brass, presented in her Sauyma (calm) demeanor, an auspicious Roopa (form) of the goddess.
Sitting on a royal throne, in the Lalitasana posture, associated with other Hindu goddesses such as Lakshmi and Saraswati, goddess Mariamman in this brass statue is present in her four-armed form, holding a trident, a sword, a skull cup, and a drum. Adorned with divine attire and jewelry, Devi Mariamman wears a conical crown circled by a fiery halo, a characteristic feature of South Indian images of powerful female deities such as Durga and Kali. A five-hooded serpent provides a canopy to the mother goddess.
The Pitha or the platform on which goddess Mariamman’s lotus throne is placed is artistically delineated to give the brass goddess statue a divine aura. Sturdy pillars support the figures of “Gaja-yali”- composite elephant and lion animals from whose tails emerge the floral vines that form the aureole for the brass goddess Mariamman statue. At the center of the aureole is the “Kirtimukha” or face of glory motif, whose features are distinctly carved, notwithstanding the compactness of the brass goddess statue. The detailing of the serpent can be seen on the reverse of the murti, which is a powerful representation of Devi Mariamman.
