The solemn yet wrathful Durga. Mahishasuramardini Durga, slayeress (‘mardini’) of the buffalo-demon (‘mahisha-asura’). Carved from fine Kadappa stone. The dense white etchings against its gorgeous natural black colour are going supremely well with the theme.
Kadappa is the name given to the endemic limestone sourced from Kadappa, Andhra Pradesh. With the right amount of skill, it is capable of accommodating a great deal of detail, which can be seen in the ten limbs of Durga as well as Her crown and hair and dhoti.
Understandably, it is the figure of Durga that visually predominates the sculpture. At Her feet, the simhavahana pounces upon the vanquished Mahishasura. Underneath it all, an ornately carved plinth completes the composition.
