A form of themother-goddess Parvati, Karumariamman is a Devi unique to Southern India. In this granite statue, we see her divine beauty in all its glory.
Shaded by the serpent and haloed by fire that symbolizes Chidagni or fire of consciousness, Karumariamman has an animated face, marked by the red-tinted lips, lively gaze, and Tripunda on the forehead.
Her ornamentation is done with local jewelry, strengthening her connection with the region. Her attributes- sword, trident, a skull cup, and damru held by a serpent are similar to the weapons of Mahadevi Parvati, in her wrathful aspects.
The silken dhoti of Karumariamman is delineated with immense details, capturing its softness as it falls on the two-tiered lotus throne, on which the goddess sits in a royal Lalitasana pose, her foot cradled by a smaller lotus blooming from the base.
