“Medeor”- the root of the words meditation and medication is the same. Healing thus is an integral step in one’s spiritual journey, so much so that in Buddhism an aspect of the Buddha is revered for his healing energies, that remove all illnesses from the devotee, making them “fit” to walk the path to Enlightenment. This form of Buddha is simply called Medicine Buddha or Bhaishajyaguru, presented in this mesmerizing Nepalese copper statute.
Medicine Buddha is enthroned on a beautifully detailed double-layered lotus throne, in Padmasana (lotus pose), a meditative posture, holding a pot of Ambrosia and herb in his hands. He is wrapped in an artistically designed garment, patterned with the sacred Swastika motif, which in Buddhism symbolizes the lotus foot marks of the Buddha.
