Vairochana- one of the Five Dhyani Buddhas in Vajrayana Buddhism is revered as “he who has a divine brilliance”. He is often presented as an aspect of the historical Shakyamuni Buddha and a representation of the philosophy of Shunyata or nothingness. Wrapped in an air of spiritual wisdom and symbolism, Vairochana is a celestial presence in Buddhism, depicted in this beautiful copper statue from Nepal in regal iconography.
Sitting in Padmasana or lotus pose, Vairochana has his hair in a traditional updo, adorned by a stunning Nepalese crown, brocaded scarf, and dhoti, along with necklaces studded with lovely gemstones. A pristine polish on the icon accompanied by the stylized flow of the scarf forming an aureole around the icon adds an aesthetic richness to the statue.
With his hands placed near his heart, Vairochana makes the “Dhammachakrapravartan mudra”- the gesture of turning the Wheel of Dharma, linked to the enlightenment of the Buddha, especially with the episode of his first sermon at Sarnath. A gentle yet animated expression can be marked at the visage of Vairochana, who with his meditating eyes and still face seems to be on an inner quest, moving deeper within, urging the meditator to do the same, guided by the transcendental light of the Bodhisattva.
