The great-mother goddess in India has innumerable forms and names. The active female energy of Hindu and Tantra philosophy changes her forms as we move from one part of India to another. In all her incarnations, Devi’s unbounded affection and protection that she extends to her children remain constant.
In one of her forms worshipped in Maharashtra, Devi is known as Tulja Bhavani or Bhavani. In the Puranic tradition, her temple at Tuljapur is mentioned as one of the 51 shakti-peethas, Shakta centres of worship formed over the body of Sati after she self-immolated. As the deity of one of the Shakti-peethas, Tulja Bhavani is seen as a form of Parvati or Durga. Apart from the Hindu textual reference, Devi is adoringly mentioned in the local folklore as the tutelary goddess of the greatest Maratha warrior in history- Chattrapati Shivaji. According to these legends, Shivaji was a devout follower of Tulja Bhavani, who, pleased with his austerities and valour, bestowed upon him her khadag or sword also known as Bhavani. With the divine weapon, Shivaji was able to slay his enemies and conquer vast areas and succeeded in establishing the great Maratha Empire.
Shivaji bows down in front of Bhavani in this brass composite, with Devi, seated on an asana of rocks- hinting at the location of her temple in hilly terrain. The Ashta-bhuja Devi adoringly looks at Shivaji who extends his hands to receive Bhavani’s aashirvad (blessings) along with her potent weapon. The entire scene is placed on a beautifully carved platform, with Bhavani taking the primary spot, looking imposing in comparison to the smaller image of Shivaji, who is identified quickly in his characteristic attire and the Jiretop pagdi cap on his head.
