The beautiful bird-Hamsa (swan) is associated with the great-goddess Saraswati in Hindu tradition, as her mount, or Vahana, is a symbol of the virtues that the Devi bestows on her devotees. A Hamsa is legendarily known to have the ability to separate milk from water (neer-ksheer-viveka), representing the wisdom that can segregate between truth and untruth. This brass statue represents the powers of Devi Saraswati, who appears as Hamsavahini, enthroned on a lovely swan, whose form is marvelously depicted in this metal sculpture. Maa Saraswati is four-armed and is wrapped in a delicate saree, with a halo around her countenance, amplifying the glory of this aspect of the goddess.
