Inspired by the Cheriyal painting from the culturally rich state of Telangana, this brass Devi Parvati head with inlay work is a striking reminder of a magnificent local art form that is one of the many hidden gems of India.
The name Cheriyal comes from a village of the same name that is the home of this art and its makers. Traditionally made with light wood and coconut shell, covered in saw-dust and tamarind seed paste, Cheriyal dolls require extreme focus and time in their making. The brass Devi (goddess) head you see here is inspired by the distinctive red paste used in Cheriyal dolls. With eyes made using black and white pieces, the face appears alive. The headdress of the goddess includes one of the best jewellery pieces you will ever see- a headband studded with charming stones, running across the length of her head. Adorned with the traditional ornamentation of Telangana, depicted by using vibrant stones, Devi’s head is a beautiful example of the world-class talent of Indian local craftsmen.
