Patanjali was indeed the father of the modern yoga, he did not invent yoga, he just assimilated its various forms into a systematic thread and named it as ‘Yoga Sutras’ which is the guide book of classical or raja yoga containing the precious words of wisdom.
It is opined that in order to teach yoga, Patanjali fell from heaven in the form of a snake as shown on this page, and is also regarded as an incarnation of the thousand headed serpent king, Shesha; lower body coiled stylistically on a double layered lotus pedestal (these coils are said to support Lord Vishnu) and upper body of a human stands erect in Namaskara mudra, paying obeisance to the entire universe.
Ornamented in lavish and a rich neckpiece with the iconographic face of an old looking serpent-man having a moustache symbolic of his years of training and expertise, high brows and the head crowned in glory. The sculptor’s high skills and immense hardwork is clearly outspeaking itself by viewing this realistically carved and moulded sculpture.
