An ornate lamp to light up your home and fortunes. Composite lamps such as the one that you see on this page are a typical feature of traditional Indian homes.
The brightly lit ghee ka dia (clarified butter lamp) is symbolic of so much of importance. As the confluence of sattva-rajas-tamas, it is the very picture of prakrti; and as the dispeller of lightlessness (avidya or ignorance), it upholds the primacy of sattvaguna.
The lamp that you see on this page is made from glistening, gold-coloured brass. Its long, curvaceous stem is punctuated by cup-shaped structures at regular intervals. From the depths of these cups emerge a network of sharply curving vines. At the tip of each vine there is a continuous five-wick dia, as well as another that dangles with the help of a chain.
The presence of Devi Lakshmi adds to the auspiciousness of this gorgeous lamp sculpture. Her chaturbhujadharini (four-armed) roopa (form) is nestled within a lotus of gigantic petals. This lotus is poised atop the miniature column that emerges from the centre of each of the undangling lamps. Such a lamp is sure to invite prosperity and plenitude into the devotee’s home.
