Mariamman- popularly known as the Durga of Southern India, is a powerful deity revered across shrines in the Dakshina Bharata, as an amalgamation of the potencies of local goddesses and Kali, Parvati, Chandi, Renuka. In this handmade brass statue, Devi Mariamman is seated on an upturned lotus seat, in a four-armed roopa, holding a trident, noose, skull cup, and the gesture of fearlessness as signs of her all-pervasive might. Her form exudes the perfection of feminine youthfulness as a signifier of the auspiciousness and fecundity she bestows, and her hair is delineated as a flaming aureole, as a representation of the fire of consciousness she embodies.
