A colossal image of the preserver of the cosmos is etched into stone in this large granite artwork.

One of the first sacred images found in ancient Hindu temples was the sculpture of Anantashayi Vishnu, reclining on his serpent, with Lakshmi, an iconic visual narrative recreated in this art.

On the intricately detailed coils of Shesha, Vishnu lies with his head resting on his hand, a pose connected with his powers of creation and preservation, and his Yoga-Nidra.

Even as he reclines, Vishnu carries a graceful demeanor, placing his hand on his waist in Kati-hasta mudra, adorned with various jewelry, a delicate dhoti whose tassels sway downward, and the sacred triangle or Srivatasa on his chest, a symbol for goddess Lakshmi.

The beloved of Vishnu, Sri-Lakshmi in a poised manner, sits near his lotus feet, ornamented regally, with one hand supporting her supple body and the other holding a lotus bud, a symbol of purity and beauty. Behind Vishnu, another female figure appears, with hands joined together, who can be identified as Bhudevi or the goddess Earth.

According to many Hindu narratives, Bhudevi approaches Vishnu, pleading with him to take an avatar and protect her from the adharma or disorder caused by demons and humans. The imagery of Anantashayan Vishnu represents cosmic order and reassurance of Vishnu’s omnipresence, which made it a part of the majestic temple structures of Badami and Mahabalipuram, from whose dextrous makers the artists of this granite master art seem to have taken inspiration.
