This simple tray is known as Abhishek Patra because it is used for carrying out a ritual called “Abhishekam”, which is a type of devotional service rendered unto the deity of a God or Goddess.
This ritual is considered very important and auspicious in our Vedic culture and tradition as it purifies our consciousness and mind, and ultimately pleases the Lord.
Abhishek Patras come in different shapes, sizes and designs. This one is a large-sized Patra made of brass with no design, suitable for up to three small deities to be worshiped at the same time. The deities are placed on the tray and bathed with various liquid ingredients such as honey, milk, yogurt, clarified butter, holy water, rose water and fruit juices along with chanting of their holy names and recitation of specific hymns.
Several fragrant flower petals are also showered upon the deities. These are showered as an offering onto the lotus feet of the Lord. An outlet has been designed on the tray which allows all the liquid offerings to pass through it into a separate vessel in which they are collected and mixed. The mixture thus obtained is distributed among the temple guests. After the Abhishekam is done, the deities are dressed and adorned with beautiful ornaments.
