Devi Karumariamman is a one-of-a-kind deity of the Hindu pantheon. She is the patron Devi of Tiruverkadu, a suburb of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India. Legend has it that She emerged from a sacred anthill, which was being destroyed to build a temple for Her. The prefix Karumari comes from Karuvil Illatha Karumari, which translates to ‘one who is not from the womb’.
The Karumariamman idol that you see on this page is a large-sized granite sculpture. It depicts Karumariamman Devi as She appeared in the dream of the first devotee. As serene as She is solemn, grave and beautiful in a distinctly ethereal way. As chaturbhujadharini, Her iconography is in keeping with the traditional Hindu Devi manifestation - lalitasana va lotus va samadhi.
