Though Nataraja is popularized the world over by Chola bronzes, this Nepalese Nataraja murti is a stunning vision of the dancing Shiva. The floral-patterned platform of Shiva is a lotus pedestal, on which an innocent-faced Shiva, with a youthful appearance, dances in his four-armed form. His eyes are active, his face round, his dhoti adorned with the “Om” symbol, his feet ornamented with anklets and Apasmara under his feet is relatively feeble- all attributes transformed to match the tone of Nepalese artwork. Brimming with dynamism, this is a rare Nataraja icon for a Shiva bhakta.
