Ilaiya Perumal (the Ageless Vishnu), also known as Ramanujan or Ramanujacharya, was an Indian philosopher and theologian who lived in South India in the 12th century CE. His devotion to Lord Vishnu led him into conflict with a king there but also inspired him to develop a new school of thought within the Vedanta tradition known as Vishishta-Advaita or qualified non-dualism. Ramanujan thought that the aatman and parmatman were comparable to the body and soul of a person. The two are essentially identical, but the soul serves the body despite this. The aatman was to serve the Supreme Lord in this manner. He opined that surrendering to the divine through bhakti can lead to moksha. The revered educator is depicted in this tiny copper figure of Swami Ramanujan sitting with his hands folded in reverence, holding a flag with the Vaishnava emblem on it.
