Vajrapani is one of the three protective deities who are often depicted surrounding the Buddha in Buddhist iconography. These three deities, Manjusri (representing the wisdom of all Buddhas), Avalokitesvara (representing the compassion of all Buddhas), and Vajrapani (representing the power of all Buddhas), each embody one of the fundamental virtues of the Buddha.
The depiction of Wrathful Vajrapani is that of a frenzied dancer encircled by flames, symbolizing the concept of metamorphosis. In his right hand, he firmly holds a vajra (thunderbolt), signifying his capacity to cut through the obscurity of delusion. Despite his appearance of rage, Vajrapani, as a symbol of the enlightened mind, is completely devoid of actual anger.
