This is a representation of Avalokiteshvara, the compassionate and merciful bodhisattva. Bodhisattvas are enlightened beings who are destined to become Buddhas but choose to postpone this final stage in order to assist humanity.
"Lord who looks down with compassion," Avalokiteshvara's name signifies. Originally gilt and inlaid with polychrome stones this statuette of Bodhisattva is directly reminiscent of a tradition of the Tibetan school both in the way the multi-coloured robe is adjusted, many hands raised in a gesture of blessings.
His enlightenment is seen in his glowing skin and the calm, steady emanating from his relaxing features. His eleven-armed, multi-headed form symbolises his boundless compassion, wisdom, and capacity to bestow numerous rewards on his followers at once. Avalokiteshvara is depicted in this brass sculpture with eleven heads and a thousand arms, fashioned in the shape of a fan on either side, delicately surrounding his torso.
In the open palms of each of his arms are a thousand eyes, while the lengthier arms hold the other Buddhist elements. When Lord Avalokiteshvara screamed out in agony at seeing the sad beings who had yet to be redeemed, Amitabha Buddha is supposed to have given him eleven heads with which he could hear the sufferers' cries and assist them. But as he tried to save them, his two hands shattered, so Amitabha aided him by bestowing a thousand arms upon him. As a result, a thousand pieces of Bodhisattva formed an imposing figure with a powerful presence.
