$765
Only 1 available

The legend of Madurai Veeran has stood the test of time, and today the folk deity is worshipped across Tamil Nadu and Kerala. He is the guardian incarnate of Madurai, the sworn protector against brigands and bandits, and a masterful fighter. Veeran’s legacy is provided to us by the text Maduraiveeraswamikathai, and oral traditions like ‘Villu Paatu’ (named so because of the use of the bow, or ‘villu,’ as a musical instrument when narrating stories).

Veeran is said to have been brought up in the Arunthathiyar community where he was a guard in the service of Bommanna Nayakan. Following his elopement with the chieftain’s daughter Bommi, he crusaded against the fury of the chieftain and sought refuge in the court of Thirumala Nayakar, for whom he provided military service, fighting against bandits, and ultimately rising in rank as a powerful general. In Madurai, he fell in love with a royal danseuse Vellaiyammal, which become a sore point of contention between Veeran and the king (who himself was courting her). Ultimately, Veeran was executed on trumped-up charges by the prodding of his enemies within the court.

Veeran’s story however could not end there, for his legend kept growing in size, prompting the king to erect a temple at the east gate of the Meenakshiamman temple. It is in service of this fateful yet glorious life of the folk warrior that the ‘sthapati’ has erected a bronze image, with Veeran brandishing an ‘aruval’ or machete, ready to slay wrongdoers tormenting the people of Madurai.
