A chandelier of bronze to grace the finest modern-day Vaishnava temple. A peacock perched on the hook that suspends it from the ceiling by a chain, and a pair of lions upon a pair of elephants from the base to the dashavatara arc. The dashavatara refers to the ten (‘dasa’) earthly incarnations (‘avatara’) of Vishnu, from Matsya and Koorma to Krishna and Kalki.
Contained within an arc of gently curving vine, the dashavataras form an arc around a central ensemble. It is replete with rich detailing. Vishnu lies upon the coils of Sheshanaga (Sheshashayi) with His head on Bhoodevi’s lap and His feet on Shreedevi’s. The winged namaskaram Garuda, His vahana, stands at His feet.
A miniscule Shivalingam in the foreground, right at the midline of Sheshanaga’s coils. Nestled asymmetrically against the multiple hoods of Sheshanaga is the padmasana Brahma who has just emerged from the navel of Vishnu. The artisan’s attention to detail is prominent in every aspect of this glittering bronze composition.
