Horsehead Phurba is specifically dedicated to Hayagriva, the wrathful form of Amitabha (Yidam Tamdin). The piercing sound is familiar to anybody who has ever heard a wrathful stallion scream. A stallion’s scream of war causes the wolf group to flee for their lives. Similarly, Hayagriva produces the same force, which is the wrathful form, or emanation of Amitabha— the Buddha of speech. Regardless of Phurba form, entire body form, Thangka form, or visualization, Hayagriva is typically seen with one or more green heads emerging from his flaming hair. Like with Green Tara, the green stands for activity and horse speaking. As in the case of the wish-fulfilling horse, horses also stand for the fulfillment of wishes. Of course, horses are also revered in Nepal, Tibet, and Mongolia.
