Manjushri in Buddhist literature is often referred to as “he who has a gentle glory”, “Manjughosha” or “he who has a sweet voice”. The element of gentleness, sweetness, and a serene aura, wraps the image of Manjushri in Tibetan Buddhism, where he is one of the most popular deities. The iconography of Manjushri depicts him in a two-armed form, with a flaming sword, a lotus with a book, and Chintamani in his hand in Vitarka mudra.
This glorious gilded copper statue from Nepal represents the sword-carrying Bodhisattva Manjushir in a divine form. With the embellishment of gold, the copper statue shines as if from within. Framed with a stone-studded, golden Nepalese crown, Manjushri’s face is animated with his gentle eyes and sweet lips, and adorned with a gem between his eyebrows, symbolizing the supreme wisdom. The brocaded garment of Manjushri wraps him beautifully, and his scarf flows on both sides lyrically, amplifying the animation of the icon.
