Kuthu in Tamil means to stand straight, while vilakku is light. This Kuthu Vilakku, is an ancient oil lamp made of brass, with a very plain crown. These lamps have been in use since the Chola era, around the 10th century CE. They typically consist of four screwed-together components. "Keezhbagam" is the name of the base plate, "kandam" is the name of the pivotal pillar, "Thanguli" is the name of the oil well with five or seven wicks, and "Prabhai" is the name of the crown. Since ancient times, these lights have been employed specifically for festive decorations in temples and have been regarded as sacred. This lamp embodies both the benevolence of a lamp and the long-standing traditions of lamp crafting.
