A woman, of no mean body proportions, sits looking into space. Confusion is writ large on her expression. Full cheeks, ample chin and a narrow forehead lend rotundity to her face. The slightly knit brows give credence to the confused expression. The artist has placed her limbs casually, displaying no movement, adding to the protagonist's sense of despair. A small choli, with no sleeves, covers her upper body, complementing the carelessly draped saree, which is knotted at the shoulder to keep it in place. Superfluous ornamentation is completely avoided.
The background shows ample foliage in toned down greens. The artist has judiciously used the warm colours for the subject against the cool greens, which helps to push it into prominence and proximity. Even the green appears in various hues and tones. Light falling on water, though a discreet part, is an important element as it displays the artist's knowledge of chiaroscuro. The foreground again has flowers in dull colours. A reptile emerging from the right corner represents the grimness of the surroundings to which the miserable woman is oblivious.
