On a round-topped, four-legged corner table stands a vase. It is a vase of substantial proportions, fashioned from sturdy clay painted dark blue. Set within the vase are three sunflowers with their stems cut just right to look good in a vase such as this. On the table next to the vase lies a fresh lemon.
The lemon complements the vibrant colour of the sunflowers that form the subject of this composition. They are each facing a different direction away from the viewer, which draws attention to the austere vase. The shadow on the tabletop hints at a window immediately behind.
The window, however, is not part of the painting. Instead, the artist has introduced a large splotch of fluid yellow colour. It is indicative of light and the outdoors, and even rubs off onto the body of the vase.
