On a banyan leaf that floats amidst the vast cosmic ocean, lies Bal Gopal, content and virtuous. This Tanjore painting captures the panorama of the heart of Marakandeya and the rest of the world. The painting depicts the story of Krishna as the divine child. It is comprehended that before the creation of the new universe and after the end of the last, Markandeya swam in this ocean for an endless time and came upon this magnificent child. His body was lovingly bedecked with jewels and majestic ornaments while his gesture held the innocence only children can. He held his foot up to his face in curiosity, wondering why great sages turn away the sweetest of nectars just to drink water from his lotus feet. Upon further exploration, the child explains that he is Vishnu, the father of the universe and the creator himself. This story has been recounted in the Mahabharata as well as in many great texts that sing praises of Lord Vishnu. In Sanskrit, this incarnation of Krishna is called Vatapatrasayi, Lord of the Banyan Leaf. He represents a new start without prejudice and judgment, as only a child can have. Embossed with stones and gold, as is the norm for Tanjore paintings, this painting perfectly captures the essence of Lord Krishna.
