Vasaksajja (one who is dressing herself up), is a Nayika (heroine) from the Indian tradition centred around the Ashta-Nayikas or Eight Heroines, where each one of them represents a period in women’s romantic life. The nayika Vasaksajja presented in this watercolour painting is getting dolled up, because she has received the much-awaited news of the arrival of her beloved.

The heroine is in a blue skirt, yellow blouse, and green chunni (scarf), all of her garments accentuating her youthful curves. Her ornaments are picked carefully by her, each piece, from her necklace to her waistband looks like individual work of art. The colour green in her scarf and more importantly in her bangles signifies fertility and auspiciousness for an Indian woman, one can see why the painter chose this particular colour for a woman ready to unite with her lover. Her face is exquisite. She is readying her hair, which she will put in a beautiful braid. Her almond eyes are fixed contemplatively at a point outside the canvas, eagerly waiting for the arrival of her love.
