A sizeable pattachitra to add some traditional folk aesthetic to your space. Handpicked from local artisans in Orissa, this pattachitra depicts the life-giving tree. The life-giving tree is a recurrent theme and motif in Indian art. This is because, in Indian culture, the tree is revered as a symbol for strength and stability as well as shade and solace.
‘Patta’ is the locally produced fabric-based canvas, on which the chitra (image) is executed. Dark ivory is the signature colour of the patta canvas. The lines etched upon the same are made with a rudimentary brush, most probably handmade by the painter himself. It is dipped in lampblack and run dexterously over the rough-hewn, richly textured canvas.
The life-giving tree is of great symbolic significance. It looms over the surrounding landscape. Its straight-barked, perfectly symmetrical canopy resembles a leaf of gigantic proportions. Zoom in on the multitude of miniscule canopies that make up the whole canopy. From a distance, they allude to the venation of the giant leaf.
