The Resplendent Guru, Guru Rinpoche

$395
Widely revered in India and Tibet, Lord Padmasambhava came into being (‘sambhava’) replete with the essence of the lotus (‘padma’). The eight-century Guru Rinpoche of India is the founder of Tibetan Buddhism and venerated by devotees as the second Buddha. The thangka-style painting that you see on this page depicts the resplendent Guru seated amidst the roseate clouds and the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayan landscape to which He belonged.

He is clad in the traditional robes of the Buddhist teacher, a distinctively Tibetan garb. In the fold of His left arm He bears a sceptre with an image of Lord Avalokiteshvara, while in the hand He bears the medicinal life-giving and reviving potion which makes up the central tenet of Tibetan medicine. In His right hand is a golden vajra. He has a handsome, perennially youthful countenance, and a composure of omniscience and equanimity.

The proportion of the solid-coloured halo, the bejewelled gold aureole, and the brilliantly coloured petals of the padmasana (lotus-throne) - these are the aspects of the iconography that are decidedly Tibetan. In addition to the same, note the delicate clouds that pervade the clear-skied backdrop and the cool streams punctuating the Himalayan terrain in the foreground.
