On a marble-floored terrace, the divine lovers spend time together. Radha and Krishna are seated in great proximity with each other on a swing under a bejewelled, temple-like frame. Coyly She avoids His gaze as He gathers Her in one arm and uses the other hand to raise Her fair face by the chin. The presence of Krishna amongst Radha and Her companions is a popular theme in Indian, no matter the time and genre.
A group of four gopis (milkmaids) are on either side of the swing. The pair immediately next to them is fanning them, while the remaining six are singing and playing on musical instruments. More gopis in the foreground who are engaged in gathering and drying flowers and communing with the peacocks. Their gorgeous figures are clad in gauze-textured lehengas that accentuate the youthful contours.
The dark tritone backdrop complements the light, cheerful colours of the foreground. A line of variegated green canopies, beyond which is the dark, dense wilderness of the Indian tropics. Even further beyond, a sea of snow-coated hills reflects the inky blueness of the heavens above. Any moment now a cold shower would descend upon the party and they would all retreat into the comfort of each other in private.
