According to Hindu Puranic legends, when the great deluge or Pralaya surrounded the universe, sage Markandeya had the vision of a dotting child floating on a Banayan leaf. The child was Krishna, symbolizing the divinity’s presence before, during, and beyond Srishti. Vatapatrashayi Krishna thus, is one of the most divine roopa of Krishna, dotting and sacred all at once. Krishna in this Tanjore painting is a moon-colored child, playing with his toe, while carrying a morsel of Makhan. In the background is the great ocean, brimming with lotuses which are symbolic of the origin of the universe.
