A glorious description of Lord Venkateshvara, a form of Bhagwan Vishnu. Whenever and wherever there is decline in religious practices and increase in irreligiosity, the Supreme Lord descends to reestablish Dharma and deliver the impious people. In Kali Yuga, Lord Vishnu appeared in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh in the form of Bhagwan Venkateshvara to attract people to God consciousness. Today, thousands and lakhs of devotees come everyday at Tirumala Temple to take the divine blessings of the Lord. The true essence of South Indian artwork can be distinctly seen in this painting.
This Tanjore style painting portrays Lord Venkasteshvara in a magical way with the use of traditional bright colors and pure gold coating studded with shining stones for beautification. Decked up with heavy ornaments from top to bottom, the Lord stands tall atop a small pedestal having four arms (chaturbhuja). He holds His Sudarshan Chakra (discus) and the Panchajanya Conch Shell in the two upper hands while the lower hands are in the boon granting Varada Mudra and resting posture. Also, a serpent is coiled around each of His upper arms. His eternal consort Goddess Lakshmi, who is His internal potency, resides on His chest as a symbol called “Shrivatsa” (the dwelling place of Shri). Just like heat cannot be separated from fire, likewise, the Goddess Lakshmi cannot be separated from the Lord. The wide and bright tilak (Urdhva Pundra) on His forehead sets off a unique contrast on the black complexioned body of the Lord. He is surrounded by a beautifully designed Kitimukham Prabhavali which adds to the aesthetics of the artwork.
