The beauteous Devi Lakshmi, clad in a saree of fluid gold fabric. Nestles a pot of gold in the crevice of Her waist. The anterior right hand is raised in aashirvada. The posterior hands wield fresh lotus blooms that flank a bejewelled crown of solid gold.
Into a solid gold-walled temple, steps in the ethereal Lakshmi Mata. She has taken a single step off the golden threshold. Peacock lamps made of the same precious metal burn brightly to welcome Her entrance. Poojana implements, and a bowlful of offerings in the foreground. Made with the same metallic embellishment that is the hallmark of the authentic Tanjore painting.
Note the banana plants at the temple entrance. The banana plant (‘kola’, in the vernacular) is considered in many subcultures to be the wife (‘bou’) of Lord Ganesha, the inseparable sibling of Mother Lakshmi. As such, the Kolabou is indicative of His presence in His sister’s iconography.
