A many-figured Tanjore painting. On the back of Nandi, His all-powerful bull vahana (mount), sits the great Lord Shiva. The beautiful Parvati, clasped in His arms, looks lovingly into His face. Adorned in silks and bejewelled gold, especially the fair Nandi in a dynamic stance, these aspects of the figures have been executed in gold-layered gesso-work.
To the right of the Shiva-Parvati-Nandi ensemble are members of the divine Shivagana, various devas of the Hindu paraloka. To the left are the mortal Shivagana, comprising sages of the highest order. Details such as the hems and the minimal adornment in the Shivagana sections have also been inlaid with gold in keeping with authentic Tanjore art.
The temple structure that frames the many figures in this Tanjore painting is the most resplendent aspect of the composition. It is made of solid gold inlay work, the soft molten metal engraved to resemble traditional temple architecture. The same is further inlaid with semi-precious stones in a wide range of jewel tones.
