Amongst the numerous life stories of Nayanar saints popular in Tamil Bhakti tradition, one belongs to Muruga Nayanar- a Shiva bhakta who offered floral garlands made from hand-picked flowers to his beloved Lord as a symbol of his affection and devotion. An offering as simple as a garland of flowers when done with a pure heart, earned Muruga Nayanar a special place in the Shaiva bhakti lores.
In this exquisite Tanjore painting, Shiva appears in his Uma-Maheshwara form, accompanied by Devi Meenakshi, seated on Nandi. The allure of Shiva's moon-like visage is enhanced by the glorious presence of his Shakti. Embellishment in the painting adds a sense of grandeur to the scene.
In the foreground, with folded hands, stands Muruga Nayanar, whose floral offering Mahadeva holds in his hands. The technique of Tanjore paintings, with specific attention to the wide, animated eyes is best displayed in this artwork, which is a sacred presence of Shiva-Shakti in any space.
